DMG | This is a powerful tool in understanding how the mechanics of 5e work, why a lot of them are in place, and will consistently help you run your games by offering mechanics for a variety of encounters and situations, like chase scenes for example.It's useful in a lot of other ways, my favorite of which is that you can grab up adventures/encounters from DMs Guild, /r/DnDBehindTheScreen, blogs, and elsewhere that assume you have access to the MM. It's something you should browse through casually for inspiration and ideas.

I have both books and the only thing I find useful in the DMG is the huge list of magic items, but those are a lot easier to homebrew compared to improvising a monster.

It's super useful for building a campaign and is full of really cool art that gives you a feel for what the creatures are 'meant to' look like (feel free to take liberty with this though) - this is much harder to find an equivalent for online because it's less about opinions and more cut and dry 'this is a balanced version of this monster' The Monster Manual on the other hand contains hundreds of stat blocks for the most iconic creatures that DnD has to offer. If you do want that sort of advice then this subreddit, /r/dndbehindthescreen or blogs like or are much better places to start and will offer you a variety of balanced viewpoints that the DMG doesn't gloss over. It's a book full of advice on world building and running a game, and it's advice that a lot of more experienced DMs disagree with.
